Adoption & Second Parent Adoption

Adoption is the legal process of establishing a legal parent-child relationship when the adopting parent is not the child’s biological or birth parent. That means that once the adoption is final, the adoptive parents have all the legal rights and responsibilities of a parent-child relationship. That new parent-child relationship is permanent and is exactly the same as that of a birth family. An adoptive parent can be a stepparent or domestic partner of one of the birth parents, a relative of the child who has been caring for the child, or someone not related to the child by blood.

California provides many protections for non-biological parents who have not legally adopted their children, but many states unfortunately do not. Legally adopting your non-biological children in California can save you potentially painful and serious consequences if you travel to or move to a state that does not recognize your family’s legal relationship.

Domestic Partnership

Our family law practice assists clients terminating their legal relationship, including divorce (dissolution) and summary termination of a domestic partnership through the Secretary of State. We are experienced in the unique issues related to domestic partnership termination, and have successfully represented clients in challenging summary termination in order to seek spousal support in family law court.
